Sewing Machines

Another drive into Kampala, luckily not at the wee hours this time, was necessary to pick up the seven used sewing machines ordered during our last trip. The market area was packed with shops vying for any customer who dared step near. Shoppers mingled among the stalls with feigned disinterest. The streets were packed with cars so finding a parking spot near enough to pack the seven machines and three stands (and six people). Gabriel and Henry skillfully avoided a severe parking violation.

The sewing machines will be distributed to various women, some of whom have sewing skills and experience. The machines are manual because many of the recipients do not have electricity. I do wonder, given the few homes I’ve seen, where exactly they’ll put these machines with their giant stands. Henry’s wife, Alice, will be one recipient. Her father was in a profession that required sewing skills so we’re hoping that Alice learned his trade. One of the garage salers gave me piles of pillow cases from which to make girls dresses. From this, and from other sewing projects, Alice can earn some money for her family.

You should have seen the car packed with six people (seating for five), three sewing machine stands, and seven machines. Yikes.
