Dinner on the Lake

Dinner on the shores of Lake Victoria included sitting at a picnic table in the dark overlooking the lake, all that could be seen in the dark. The restaurant had two food choices – chicken or fish. It took quite a while for the food to come and at one point I said something like, what did they do go and catch the chicken? Then it dawned on me that they might really have done that. I asked Gabriel if restaurants in Uganda actually did that and he said yes. Whoops.

While we waited we were entertained by the pelting of bugs on our faces. The wind was strong and rather than swarming thee bugs were being thrown through the air like pellets hitting our faces and sticking in our hairs. We were hesitant to even open our mouths. Even more worrisome was the swooping bats all around the tree we were sitting under. I was a bit worried they’d make life easy on themselves and check my hair for bugs. Behind Gabriel, whose back was to the lake, we could see more than a dozen spider webs from tree to ground and we could see the spiders going up and down their lines.
