The better part of the day was spent developing an organizational structure and job descriptions for the Ugandan branch of Mercy Uganda so as to obtain the nonprofit status. Laura, Lauren, Henry, and I discussed the position of the Board of Directors at great length. Should there be two – one U.S. and one Ugandan? Should there be one with members from both countries? What effect would logistics have on the success of the board? Can board members also be ministry liaisons? What happens when the organization grows? How can the founder (Laura) protect her role/mission/vision? I believe we’ve developed a very realistic and appropriate structure.
Henry, who seems to have friends in many high places, suggested that we invite the Minister of Ethics to sit on the Board (along with two other native Ugandans). This man is a well-respected Christian and is already aware of Mercy Uganda and its work here. A well-connected government official on any Board can have some pros and cons of enormous proportions.
Henry is trying to arrange a meeting with the Minister of Ethics to discuss child sacrifice on the 16th or 17th. Laura, Henry, and I will develop a strategic approach to securing his participation during this meeting.
P.S. Still no water.
